National Magazine Awards Foundation elects three new members
The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) has welcomed three new members and a new president to its board of directors for the 2014-2015 term. The board is made up of leaders in the industry and aims to promote excellence in Canadian print and digital publications through its award program and publicity efforts.
Newly appointed president Joyce Byrne has served on the board since 2010 and was the vice president from 2012-2104. Byrne is the publisher of Avenue magazine in Calgary and is a Silver National Magazine Award winner.
"I am delighted to be able to champion excellence in Canadian magazines, and to be the first president of the National Magazine Awards Foundation based in Western Canada,” Byrne said. “Though Canada has a vast geography, our magazines bring us together, and our creators help us see other lives through their eyes. The NMAF board is a dedicated and invested group of volunteers who like me, value the role that singling out our best work can have on company culture, staff and freelancer career development, and even our bottom line. We have an exciting year ahead and our new directors bring fresh perspectives and great experience to our bench."
The three new members include:
Christopher Frey, journalist and two-time winner at the NMA awards. Frey is the editor-in-chief of Hazlitt and director of digital publishing at Random House.
Terry Sellwood, president of Cottage Life Media and publisher of Cottage Life magazine—which took home the award for Canada’s magazine of the year. Sellwood served on the board in the past and was the president from 2001-2003. He will serve as vice-president for the 2014-2105 term.
Melony Ward, publisher of Canada’s History and Kayak: Canada’s History for Kids magazines. She currently serves on the magazine advisory committee for Ontario Media Development Corporation and previously served on the board of Magazines Canada.
