Manitoba cites climate for cancelling print subs
A new provincial policy in Manitoba calls for government offices and publicly funded entities to cancel print subscriptions to newspapers, magazines and periodicals, in a bid to save money and reduce paper waste in accordance with Manitoba’s climate plan. Bodies, such as school libraries are encouraged to switch to digital subscriptions, unless they can prove a demonstrated business need for print.

The policy, introduced in Fall 2019, has been criticized by the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association, which pointed out that newspapers in the province run free, sponsored and paid educational programs in schools, providing teachers with hard copies to use for lessons. A spokesperson for Manitoba’s French schools also pointed out that up to 20% of families in the school division don’t have access to the internet at home.
