Tech journalists ban “on background” briefings

This in from the US: Leading tech publications have banned “on background” briefings from PR reps following allegations that the reps are abusing the convention. Wired recently announced it would make all comments from company spokespeople on the record by default. It follows Quartz and The Verge in adopting the strategy.

The Verge, for example, reports being told that Volkswagen planned to change its name to Voltswagen to celebrate electric vehicles, only for the company to later reveal it was an April Fool’s Joke. Phone companies also offered information on new specs for an upcoming release off the record, only to later change them and make The Verge look like it made an error.

The changes have come amid rising levels of cynicism about the behaviour of tech giants. For a more detailed story, check out the Press Gazette.
