Langara Journalism Review celebrates 20 years
The annual publication focuses on issues, trends, events and personalities in journalism in the media industry, specifically in Western Canada and the Pacific Rim.
A look back
—Rob Dykstra, instructor and publisher
The premiere issue of the Langara Journalism Review featured CBC-TV Vancouver anchor Gloria Macarenko. It was produced by fourth-term journalism students at Langara College under the auspices of a magazine editing and production course— as was the 20th anniversary edition you are holding in your hands today.
Over the years, the project has provided students with the full gamut of experience—producing a magazine from story conception to pre-press production, and these days, uploading to the Web.
Personally, I have always had a love for long-form journalism and the magazine features such content. As I oversee the my last LJR, I am pleased to know that a good number of students have gone on to work in the magazine industry—as writers, editors and photographers. Some have even started their own magazines.
Overseeing the production of an annual review focusing on journalism and media in Western Canada has been a thrilling experience. The 'books' haven't always been perfect, but, after all, it's the experience that counts. Hope you enjoy the read.
