Journalist Neville Nankivell, Editor, Publisher and Columnist for the Financial Post, died on May 3, 2026, at his home in Ottawa. He was 91. For more than 40 years, Nankivell helped shape Canadian business journalism. Colleagues remembered him as an incisive editor, accomplished writer, and kind mentor whose intellect left a lasting impression on generations of reporters and editors. Born December 8, 1934, in Cottesloe, Western Australia, Nankivell studied economics at the University of Western Australia before emigrating to Canada in 1956.
He first joined Canadian Press before moving to Toronto to complete his Master of Commerce Degree at the University of Toronto. Nankivell was known for combining rigorous business reporting with a keen understanding of newspaper design. In the 1980s, he earned a sought-after Society of Newspaper Designers Gold Award on behalf of the Financial Post design team. In 1991, he moved to London, England, as Editor-at-Large of the Financial Post, before returning to Canada to lead the Financial Post’s Ottawa Bureau. There, he guided coverage of national politics, trade, and economic policy during periods of profound change in Canada’s economy.
