Canadian wins Nobel Prize for literature
Anne Carson
Anne Carson
Toronto-born author, poet, and essayist Anne Carson, 76, has won the Nobel Prize for literature for her playful, genre-blending works that fuse the classical and the modern. Carson earned three University of Toronto degrees and is the second Canadian woman and first U. of T. alumna to win the international accolade, widely regarded as the world’s highest literary honour. Carson taught classics at several North American universities and lives in Reykjavík, Iceland, where she and her husband, Robert Currie, were granted citizenship in 2022.
Carson drew on themes and stories from ancient Greek and Roman literature for works that often blend elements of poetry, essays and fiction. Her books include Eros the Bittersweet, a look at the pleasure and pain of desire in ancient Greek literature, the verse novel Autobiography of Red, Men in the Off Hours, a collection of poetry and prose that won Canada’s Griffin Prize for Poetry in 2001, and Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, which compares Marilyn Monroe and Helen of Troy. Carson has also translated several works of classical Greek literature.
