CRTC moves to implement Online News Act

The CRTC is moving to implement the Online News Act. It will set up a framework of negotiations between news organizations in Canada and the online platforms that distribute news content. The CRTC will then oversee the mandatory bargaining process once it is in place. A public consultation to gather the views of Canadians and interested parties will also take place.

The process kicks off this Fall with a public consultation and a call for proposals for an independent auditor who will prepare an annual report on the impact of the Online New Act.

In Summer 2024, the CRTC will publish the framework and code of conduct and reuit arbitrators and begin information gathering. In late 2024 or early 2025, bargaining can begin.
