Canadian Antiques & Vintage Magazine closes

Founded in 1963, published six times a year, and formerly known as The Upper Canadian, Canadian Antiques & Vintage Magazine was Canada’s only national magazine dedicated to antiques, fine art, folk art, and vintage collectables. Various reasons were cited for the closure. During the pandemic in 2020, the magazine was forced to temporarily close because antique shops and shows also closed. Upon re-opening later that year, subscription and advertising revenue dropped by an unprecedented 48%.
Plus, increases in the costs of paper, printing, postage, subscriber list management, and mailing house services, rose significantly. Most recently, American tariffs caused many American advertisers to disappear from publications outside the U.S., due to the challenges of cross-border buying, selling and shipping of antiques on the American side, as well as purchasing resistance of American antiques from the Canadian side. Finally, the business also faced the ongoing national decline of printed magazines and ‘pure antiques’ spaces in Canada.
