Canada’s History and Kayak tie at Maggie Awards
Both Canada’s History and Kayak: Canada’s History Magazine for Kids went home with the top prize at yesterday’s 2016 Manitoba Magazine Awards (also known as the Maggie’s). This is the first time in Maggie history that two publications have been presented with the award for Magazine of the Year.

Canada’s History Society publishes both magazines. Editor-in-chief Mark Reid accepted the award on behalf of Canada’s History and art director James Gillepsie accepted on behalf of Kayak.

The annual awards celebrate the best work in Manitoba-based magazines published in 2015. This year’s celebration took place in the main dining hall of Red River College’s Exchange District Campus and was hosted by Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press and the Corus Radio Network. Twenty-eight finalists were nominated for eight awards.

And the winners are:

Prairie Fire : A Canadian Magazine of New Writing won two awards for creative writing: Best Poem or Suite of Poems (for three poems by Patrick Friesen) and Best Short Fiction Story (for “Hole in the Wall” by Nadia Bozak).

Herizons : Women’s News & Feminist Views also won two awards : Best Regular Column or Department (for First Word, by Herizons editor Penni Mitchell) and Best Cover, Photography (for the issue KC Adams and the Art of Disarming Racism).

Conservator : The Magazine of Ducks Unlimited Canada won the award for Best Editorial Feature, Design (for the article “Pit Stops and Pitfalls”).

Canada’s History received the award for Best Editorial Feature, Writing (for the article “ The Twisted Genius of George Feyer” by Brad Mackay) while Kayak won for Best Cover, Illustration (for the issue Meet Our Prime Ministers).

Other magazines with nominated finalists include Contemporary Verse 2 : The Canadian Journal of Poetry and Critical Writing ; Geez : Contemplative Cultural Resistance ; The Cellar Door : Wine and Possibilities ; and The Manitoba Teacher : Newsmagazine of The Manitoba Teachers’ Society.
