Writers’ Trust awards $10,000 to author of short story published in Geist magazine
The $10,000 Writers’ Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize—for the best short story published by an emerging writer in a Canadian literary magazine— went to Deidre Dore for “The Wise Baby,” published in Geist.
Finalists in that category included Emily Bossé for Last Animal Standing on Gentleman’s Farm, published in The Fiddlehead, and Anna Ling Kaye for Red Egg and Ginger, published in Prairie Fire.
Each finalist received $1,000 and the journal publishing the winning entry received $2,000. The grand jury consisted of writers Anthony De Sa, Tanis Rideout, and Carrie Snyder. James A. Michener donated the Canadian royalty’s of his earnings for his 1998 novel Journey, to make this prize possible. In association with this prize, McClelland & Stewart publishes an annual fiction anthology, The Journey Prize Stories, a collection of the 12 stories that formed the longlist for the prize.
The Writers’ Trust of Canada is a charitable organization that seeks to advance, nurture, and celebrate Canadian writers and writing in various ways including, literary awards, financial grants, scholarships, and a writers’ retreat.
