Freshet News founders celebrate their first issue at Transcontinental
In April 2025, Glacier Media (now Lodestar) shut down three community news outlets in British Columbia – Burnaby Now, New West Record, and Tri-City News – leaving about 600,000 residents without daily local coverage. When those outlets also ceased digital publication, laid-off reporters Cornelia Naylor, Theresa McManus, Mario Bartel and Janis Cleugh (above, from left), formed a non-profit news co-operative and launched the Freshet News website in October.
The founders recently celebrated their first printed issue December 18, 2025, at Transcontinental Printing, Annacis Island. About 25,000 copies of the first edition are now in circulation. Dozens of volunteers recently distributed the newspapers at city halls, community centres, libraries, grocery stores, and SkyTrain stations across Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, and the villages of Anmore and Belcarra).
