On Spec Magazine to close in December

On Spec has announced that it will cease publication in December of 2025 with the release of Volume 35, Issue No. 4 – its final edition. The Canadian speculative fiction magazine was founded in 1989 and is considered to be the premiere magazine of science fiction and fantasy in Canada. The digest-sized, perfect-bound Canadian quarterly publishes stories and poetry about science fiction, fantasy, and allied genres, grouped under the “speculative fiction” umbrella. Based in Edmonton, On Spec was founded in 1989 by a small group of local writers who joined together to form The Copper Pig Writers Society. At that time, there was no paying market for English speculative fiction in Canada, though paying markets in French did exist
