New media venture to focus on community news

J-Source reports that a new Canadian media company focused on community news launched earlier this month. The new venture, Overstory Media Group, plans to start 50 community outlets and hire 250 journalists by 2023.
It already has 10 publishers in B.C. on its roster, including Capital Daily, Vancouver Tech Journal, Fraser Valley Current, Burnaby Beacon and Decomplicated.

Founded by Farhan Mohamed, former editor in chief and co-owner of Daily Hive, and Andrew Wilkinson, tech entrepreneur and co-founder of Tiny Foundation, OMG was created in response to gaps and the haphazard ways in how local news was being delivered.

Overstory will focus on high-quality reporting in three types of communities: geographical, industry, and general interest. It will launch its first geographical community site outside B.C. shortly and currently has several job postings.
