Métro Média shuts downs

Métro Média in Quebec suspended operations in mid-August without much warning, a move that will end news coverage of local government in parts of the provinces’ two largest cities, reports The Canadian Press.

The company operated 30 hyperlocal publications, including 17 print newspapers. CEO Andrew Mulé said in a statement that the company no longer had enough liquidity to continue operating, even though it had a healthy balance sheet.

The Fédération nationale de la culture et des communications, a Quebec media union, is calling for government action to preserve local news on Montreal Island. The union has met with investors and the city of Montreal to attempt to find a solution.

Métro Média was created in 2018 when Michael Raffoul acquired 30 publications, including the daily free newspaper Métro and 29 weekly community papers — from printer Transcontinental Inc. According to the company it had 100,000 readers every week and nearly two million unique visitors a month. It distributed a total of 165,000 copies of its weekly papers each month.
