IFJ releases final 2025 list of journalists killed

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has released the names of 128 journalists and media workers who lost their lives in 2025. The list includes 9 accidental deaths. The updated list underscores a deadly year for journalism and the continued prevalence of selective impunity.  Since the launch of its Annual Killed List in 1990, the IFJ has recorded 3,173 deaths worldwide, an average of 91 deaths per year, and 876 in the last 10 years. The Federation has also released its list of 533 journalists in jail, with China as the world’s No.1 jailer.
For the third consecutive year, the Middle East and the Arab world have been the regions worst affected. With 74 journalists killed, Palestinian journalists paid the highest price as a result of the ongoing Gaza occupation by Israel. The Middle East and Arab world accounted for 58% of all media professionals killed globally. Yemen ranked second with 13 deaths, then Ukraine with 8, Sudan reported 6 deaths, India and Peru 4, and several other countries – including the Philippines, Mexico, and Pakistan – each lost 3 journalists. The IFJ represents over 600,000 journalists in 146 countries.
