Five Canadian writers shortlisted for major fiction award

The best Canadian fictional novel or short story
The annual Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, named after renowned Canadian authors Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson, recognizes the best Canadian fictional novel or short story collection by a Canadian author. Funded by the Balsillie Family Foundation, the winner will receive $70,000, up $10,000 from last year. Plus, all five finalists will now earn $7,500, up from $5,000 in 2024.
The 2025 nominees are Tim Bowling for Graveyard Shift at the Lemonade Stand, Robert McGill for Simple Creatures, Otoniya J. Okot Bitek for We, The Kindling, Maria Reva for Endling, and Aurora Stewart de Peña for Julius Julius. This year’s jury included fiction writers Gary Barwin, Ali Bryan, and Jasmine Sealy, who selected the finalists from 120 titles. The shortlisted titles are available in accessible formats through the Centre of Equitable Library Access. The winner will be announced at the Writers’ Trust Awards Gala Thursday, November 13 in Toronto.
