Briefs & Bookmarks: NatGeo, Langara Review, Yakuza mag

British Columbia's Paul Nicklen will represent as National Geographic's only Canadian photographer at the National Geographic Live speaker series in Toronto, as reported by the Toronto Star.

The Langara Journalism Review talks to Gary Ross, formerly of Vancouver Magazine and Saturday Night, about challenges in the world of print magazines: "It's a terrible grind."

Also from the LJR comes an interview with travel writer Daniel Wood that touches on the changing market, and how he and a handful of fellow freelancers fought back against Canada Wide Media's writers agreement.

Congrats to Halifax magazine editor Trevor Adams, who lost 41 pounds of fat and gained 7 pounds of muscle thanks to fitness goals he set in the January health and wellness issue. Canadian Magazines has more. Extra congrats to Adams on getting through those TRX workouts, because "they are the worst," said my entire body.

New Mag of the Week goes to Yamaguchi-gumi Shinpo, the official magazine of the Yakuza crime syndicate. No surprise: it's only distributed to members of the Japanese gang. Apparently the mag aims to boost morale in the face of bad PR and toughening legislation. How corporate.
