Canada Post backs down on changes to unwrapped magazines
Canada Post Corporation (CPC) has backed off on placing restrictions on unwrapped magazines based on industry feedback.

The change, which was outlined by Canada Post in July, stated unwrapped magazine covers will be limited to one "gatefold" due to "health and safety issues reported when handling unwrapped publications mail items bearing a 'gatefold' on the front and back covers."

However, a high-ranking publishing industry source pointed out Canada Post was incorrect in its own reference to the "gatefold" cover, noting it would be more accurately described as a partial cover. The source was also concerned because partial covers had been sold to clients and ready to run well into 2012, while the restriction was originally slated to come into effect Jan. 16, 2012.

Anick Losier, Canada Post spokesperson, said in an email to Masthead Tuesday, "Given the recent feedback and impact on our customers, we've decided not to introduce the proposed changes to 'gatefolds' in January 2012. In fact, we're reassessing and putting the project on hold indefinitely."
