Garden Making set to launch in March
Former Canadian Gardening editor Beckie Fox is set to launch her own magazine, Garden Making, in March 2010. She says the magazine will focus on providing thorough information on plants, techniques and methods for new and avid gardeners. “The book will also include a good healthy dose of growing your own food, sustainable gardening,” she says.

Fox and her husband, Rogers Publishing senior vice president, circulation and development Michael Fox are co-investors in the magazine which is being run out of their Niagara-On-The-Lake home. Fox says it will differ from competitors  including Canadian Gardening because of the type of information it will offer. “We will be a little more in-depth in our garden and plant coverage,” she says.

Each issue of the magazine will contain at least 70 pages of editorial, says Fox, regardless of the amount of advertising. The design director of the book is Gary Hall, former deputy art director at Maclean’s.

Distributed by Coast to Coast Newsstand Services, Garden Making will be available at Indigo, Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws and Metro. It is also the media partner for Toronto-based gardening show Canada Blooms.

Fox says subscriptions to the quarterly magazine have been going well, considering that until this week it was promoted only though word of mouth and web traffic. A one-year subscription is $19.95. This week it started a direct mail campaign to 40,000 names from gardening and magazine lists. Fox says it hopes to have a circulation of 14,000 for the launch issue which goes on sale March 1.
