A judging panel made up of Canadian Geographic editor Rick Boychuk, former Where Calgary editor Andrew Mah and former Western Living editor Jim Sutherland made the selection. On their choice, they offered this:
“Michael McCullough gets out a monthly magazine that is always topical and excels at both content and style. The mix is appropriate and even inspired; the writing is crisp and compelling; the packaging is first rate. This is a business magazine in keeping with the modern idea that business publications are—and need to be—as compelling as any. And McCullough's job doesn't end there. He's a mentor to writers and other editors and a public figure whose appearances on CBC radio and elsewhere help promote his title.”
Upon accepting the award, McCullough, who has been in publishing for nearly 20 years, thanked his team, noting that “there is an ‘i’ in editor, but it’s small and it’s in the middle.”
