Maxim Canada promises wealth of Canadian content
The editor of the new Maxim Canada magazine set to launch next week said the first edition's content will be just that — Canadian.
Rose, from Chicago, was a "hometown hottie" contest winner, "and since then she's fashioned herself into the brand ambassador," explained Christie. "She's going to be kicking off a Canadian hometown hottie search."
"Of the 17 contributors this (first) issue, only one was non-Canadian," said Toronto's Brendan Christie. Those contributors include Edge 102.1's Dave Bookman, comedian Gerry Dee and Jacob Richler, he added.
"It was actually really easy to execute it in almost entirely Canadian content. I'd say 80 to 90% is Cancon," he said.
Maxim Canada is hitting the stands next week (May 17) and is published by GDC Media, a company of Geoffrey Dawe (formerly of Toronto-based Kontent Publishing), who will act as a publication director alongside Catherine Bridgman.
The inaugural cover, designed by Toronto-based K9 Design, points to stories about Canadians on the frontlines of the UFC and the long rivalry between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, amongst other Canadian-focused articles. But the cover model, April Rose, is not Canadian.

He said readers will see some Canadians on upcoming covers, with planning for the second edition already underway.
For now, Maxim Canada will be bagged with the popular U.S. version with 180,000 copies coming to Canada, said the editor. The Canadian version will be a seasonal quarterly, with the first issue at 68 pages and the second more than 100 pages. While the U.S. cover price is $6.99, there's no stand-alone price for the Canadian edition yet, said Christie.
GDC Media also publishes special projects with The Toronto Star, and co-publishes International Architecture and Design Magazine. GDC also published the FT 25 (Fashion Television 25 Magazine).
