ABC changes announced
The Audit Bureau of Circulations Canada Board Committee met recently to review rule changes, product enhancements and member requests. Among the changes announced are a new option to separate averages, elimination of the qualified paid circulation form and approving multimedia reports for farm publications.

According to the ABC press release, traditionally business publication reports have only shown one circulation average number for each member. But with the increased use of digital circulation, many publishers have added weekly digital products to their monthly print publications. So, as of the December 2010 reports the ABC Board voted to allow Canadian business publications to report products with different frequencies as separate circulation averages.

ABC business members currently report with two formats, qualified paid circulation (blue) and qualified paid and/or qualified non-paid circulation (ivory). Since the format and data requirements in each report are identical and the majority of ABC business members now use the qualified paid and/or qualified non-paid circulation report the board gave the preliminary approval to eliminate the qualified paid report. If given final approval in November, the qualified paid (blue) report format will not be available for the December 2010 filing period.

The board also voted to allow ABC member farm publications to use a multimedia report to display data for various media platforms, including print publications, websites, e-newsletters, digital subscriptions and more. The report will be available to farm publications with the December 2010 reporting period.

Two new additions to the ABC Canada Board were announced at the meeting. National Post president Gordon Fisher and TVA Publications Inc. president Jocelyn Poirier have joined the committee.

The board of directors also voted to maintain current ABC audit rates for the next year.
