SI The Freshman
Sports Illustrated has chosen Andrew Wiggins, the 18-year-old guard from Thornhill, Ontario, for their latest cover (October 14, 2013). Quite an honour, and perhaps a ton of pressure, for the freshman who has yet to play his first game for the Kansas Jayhawks.

This cover eschews the old “eye-contact” rule…wisely in this case, as his face is not yet iconic, the way JFK, Michael Jordon, or Tom Cruise might be. We do see his name, “Wiggins,” on the back of his jersey. But what really makes this cover is the black and white retrospectives in the background.

As a result, the cover has a classic, vintage look that will evoke emotions from diehard basketball fans, yet draw in the younger audience who is hungry for the latest hotshot.

The cover line is simple and direct. I love the way the logo was scruffed-up. This cover should sell well in Canada!
