Last night, Magazines Canada and the CMC, hosted the Canadian Cover Awards.
The event was held at the Courtyard Toronto Downtown hotel. Deborah Morrison, Publisher of Canada’s History, opened the evening by thanking all the sponsors. The crowd joined in by singing “happy birthday” to Edra Sefton, of Magazines Canada, who helped stage the show.
Amanda Beattie, Assistant Circulation Manager, Cottage Life Media, acted as the MC.
The Canadian Cover Awards recognize and celebrate the success and importance of magazine covers in Canadian single copy sales. Canadian magazine titles were invited to submit top-selling covers for consideration in seven award categories. Entries were open to issues sold in the 2011 calendar year or early 2012 with final newsstand sales. Newsstand sales were worth 50 percent of a title’s final score, the remaining 50 percent determined by a panel of judges that included a retailer, a wholesaler, a national distributor and a circulation director, who look at artistic merit, amongst other factors.

The Magazine Marketer of The Year is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates true innovation and passion within a successful newsstand marketing project. The winner this year is Greg Keilty.
As Publisher of SkyNews, Greg Keilty has overseen a 43.6% increase in total sales over the last year, as well as the release of the magazine’s 100th issue in October 2011. In support of this milestone, Keilty adopted an aggressive promotion campaign that paid off with record sales as the magazine reached its highest numbers ever for a single issue. A respected and dedicated leader in the industry, Greg Keilty has for many years displayed the ongoing passion and commitment to magazines and the role of the newsstand that have made him this year’s Newsstand Marketer of the Year.
