Why do we need you?

Totem, an affiliate business under Yellow Pages (“The Company”) is looking for an Art Director in a contract position for one year. In this role, you will lead the design vision for one of our largest custom content clients, working from initial concepts to production-ready art in print and online.

As well:

- You are a creative, insightful and strategic design decision-maker.
- You have the ability to develop ideas both big and small that make the difference between mediocre work and great work.
- You are confident in your ideas, and are able to passionately present them in their rough form and refine them for presentation to clients.
- You can work closely with writers and editors, as well as mentor junior designers, to create a polished and professional product.
- You have a strong understanding of the production process to ensure concepts are built to support a streamlined conversion to production-ready files.
- You stay abreast of design trends and marketing tools to continually advance creative craftsmanship.

What will you be doing?

• Deliver strategic thinking, concepts, art direction and layouts that reflect smart, high-quality creative work.
• Work closely with editors to create and oversee the overall look, creating vibrant, fresh and smart designs, while ensuring that work reflects the client’s business and brand requirements.
• Oversee art budgets and manage schedules in conjunction with production staff.
• Commission freelancers and maintain strong relationships with contributors – photographers, illustrators, etc.
• Lead and mentor junior designers; hire and manage contributors/freelancers as needed.
• Ensure the magazine’s overall brand, including its website and other digital products, has a consistent visual presentation.
• Monitor all assigned production and follow through all phases of production, ensuring design integrity is maintained as concepts are transitioned to production-ready art files.
• Lead client presentations of creative work.

What we’re looking for?

Education, Experience & Technical Skills

• 5+ years of experience as an Art Director in an agency/editorial setting
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent within appropriate discipline such as Graphic Design/Editorial Design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the key accountability of the job required
• Ability to work across all platforms — print, digital and integrating between the two
• Stellar portfolio demonstrating solid experience
• Experience in directing and managing photo shoots
• Strong understanding of best practices for both print and digital, working knowledge of photography, typography, and various printing techniques
• Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office, etc.
Digital/video experience a plus.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills
